County hears Texas A&M AgriLife Extension family and community health update; commissioners approve report for record

Rachel, County Extension Agent for Family and Community Health (AgriLife Extension), briefed the Commissioners Court on annual programming, participants and targets and the department’s plans to expand school outreach and community partnerships.
Rachel said the department ran about 90 educational programs with 1,694 participants in the portion of fiscal 2024 covered by her tenure and expects roughly 120 programs and an estimated 2,970 educational contacts in fiscal 2025. She summarized chronic disease programming, partnerships with local test kitchens and health providers, and a goal to expand financial‑literacy programming in high schools.
On the challenge of entering school districts, Rachel said the office has reached Conley High School and Conley Middle School and plans to add China Spring High School in fall 2025. She also said the department will offer 20–40 programs annually in a local STEAM test kitchen and partner with Waco Family Medicine for chronic‑disease programming. "I hate when people read to me, so I won't read to you," Rachel told the court as she introduced the highlights.
Staff noted a small county decline of 2 percentage points in cardiovascular diagnoses or deaths in the region reported to the central region leader; Rachel said increased programming and provider referrals may contribute. Commissioners asked to receive the report for the record; the court approved the request without objection.
