The Malden Zoning Board of Appeals on June 18 approved a variance allowing Chase Bank to install a third identical wall sign on the Main Street elevation of the building at 361 Main Street.
The petition, presented by a representative of the sign installer, sought relief because the city's sign code allows one wall sign per street frontage up to two signs; the building fronts three streets. "We're proposing a third wall sign on the Main Street elevation, since it is a new tenant to gain some initial visibility for new customers," the installer representative said.
Board members discussed visibility and how the building's entrances are located on the parking-side east elevation and on Irving Street, while Main Street and Center Street elevations front public ways without primary customer entrances. The installer representative said the three proposed signs would be identical to the two signs already installed and would be internally illuminated.
Commissioner King moved to approve the petition; Commissioner Bilgin seconded. The vote was recorded with Sherwin voting no and the remaining members voting yes; the motion carried and the petition was approved.
The board did not attach special conditions beyond approving the plans as presented. The representative said the branch is open and that no additional window promotional signage is planned.
