Oak Creek adopts updated Milwaukee County Hazard Mitigation Plan to maintain grant eligibility

The Oak Creek Common Council adopted a resolution on June 17, 2025, approving the updated Milwaukee County Hazard Mitigation Plan for the City of Oak Creek.
Matt Sullivan, assistant city administrator and city engineer, explained the countywide plan update involved multiple municipalities and was supported by FEMA. He said Chief Kresick and other local stakeholders participated and that the plan is required for some grant programs and would support the city’s efforts to seek congressional discretionary funds for lakefront stabilization. Sullivan said, “one of the items that we need to have is this mitigation plan in order to continue to move on in the process in regards to funding at the lakefront for our stabilization project.”
Councilmembers asked whether the plan proposes mandated actions or costs; staff said adoption does not itself impose required actions or costs on the city but provides a regional mitigation framework and helps the city access grants and coordinate emergency management activities.
The council adopted the resolution on roll call. The plan’s adoption places Oak Creek among participating regional stakeholders and is intended to preserve eligibility for FEMA and other mitigation funding and to provide a reference for local emergency management and mitigation efforts.
