Consultants working on behalf of the Unity Foundation told the La Porte City Urban Enterprise Association June 18 that the foundation has funds available to support upper-story housing projects in downtown La Porte.
Mary Anne (staff member) and board members said they met with consultants Katie Wren and Bill Taft, who indicated Unity Foundation could provide additional funding to supplement UEA grants for qualifying upper-story housing conversions. The consultants said the foundation needs to allocate funds within about two to two-and-a-half years. Board members asked staff to screen incoming grant applications for projects that might be eligible for supplemental Unity Foundation funding and to refer qualifying projects to the consultants for further review.
The board described the funding as an additional opportunity to support significant interior and exterior renovation projects that add residential units above ground-floor commercial space. No formal action was recorded; staff will evaluate applications and coordinate with the Unity Foundation consultants as appropriate.
