Luby Community Center mural finished; public dedication set for mid‑July

Metro Arts staff told the Public Art Committee that mural installation at Luby Community Center is complete and that the agency plans a public dedication in mid‑July.

"We have completed the mural, and we are in the process of planning for our official unveiling and public dedication, and that will be mid July," Missonya, a Metro Arts staff member, said. She said installation began in early April and concluded in May, and that installers had to address unexpected wall conditions: the aggregate wall absorbed primers and required multiple layers of specialized primer and seam work.

Staff credited Art of Nashville (installers) and Parks for approvals, and said the team painted a royal purple base at the mural's bottom to improve visibility. The lead artist listed for the project is Alicia Baugh, working under Creative Girls Rock; staff said a three‑minute, thirty‑second video about the project will be released next Monday and that the dedication will begin inside the Luby Theater and conclude outdoors. Committee members were given a tentative time of 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. for the event and were advised to arrive by about 1:15 p.m. for best parking.

Committee members raised visibility and landscaping questions. Staff acknowledged requests to trim or remove trees blocking sight lines and said they would check ownership and coordinate with Parks and other departments where necessary. The mural was funded through a participatory budgeting process, staff said.

Staff invited committee members and the public to the dedication and said final logistics and invitations would be shared in the coming weeks.
