Traffic board tables Pine Street one‑way proposal pending fire‑department input

FALL RIVER, Mass. — The Fall River City Traffic Board on June 18 tabled consideration of a proposal to make Pine Street one‑way after hearing from Ken Levesque, executive director of the VAVC at Pine Street, who said a one‑way would open parking for the veterans organization.
Levesque asked for Pine Street to be made one‑way from Robeson to Seabury to increase available parking for veterans who use the center. The board discussed earlier recommendations from the fire department, which at one point recommended the opposite direction; an ordinance committee previously sent the matter back to the traffic board for further review.
Board members said a fire‑department representative should attend the next discussion. The motion to table was made by John LaPointe and seconded by Helen Rigo; the board directed staff to invite a fire‑department representative and to reach out to representatives of the Sacred Heart apartment project mentioned in the discussion.
Ken Levesque told the board the veterans center serves large numbers of people: “I would say roughly anywhere between 50, 80” cars a day and “usually about a 100 veterans that come through the door a day,” and that limited on‑site parking and nearby construction have increased pressure on Pine Street parking.
Board members and speakers also raised operational concerns, including whether trash and emergency vehicles could access the block under either one‑way configuration and noted abutters had been contacted for the meetings to date. The board did not adopt any traffic change at the meeting and tabled the item to the next session to obtain the fire‑department input and additional information about the nearby apartment project at Sacred Heart.
