The official also thanked the St. Louis Park Police Department for monitoring the events and providing extra patrols for elected officials who live in the city.
The official singled out the cities of Brooklyn Park and Champlin for their response, saying their “quick action and to the actions of local law enforcement and first responders” helped ensure the Hoffmans were expected to survive. “We want to express our support for the cities of Brooklyn Park and Champlin who experienced the shocking incident,” the official said.
The official framed the events as acts of political violence and called for respectful public discourse. “By all accounts, these were targeted acts of political violence. We want to take this time to state that we condemn violence of any kind, including political violence,” the official said, and urged residents to “encourage a peaceful exchange of ideas and opinions in both our public and private lives.”
No formal council action was taken on the matter during the meeting; the remarks were given as opening comments and public expression of sympathy and support. The council’s remarks noted that more information is expected in the coming days and weeks and encouraged residents to support affected communities and elected officials as investigations continue.
