The San Fernando City Council on June 16 established an ad hoc committee to review waste-hauling services and the contract with the city's current provider. Council Member Patty Lopez sponsored the item and the council appointed Council Members Patty Lopez and Joe Fajardo to the ad hoc; the motion passed unanimously.
Council members said the ad hoc should examine service complaints, communication with residents and businesses, contract terms and potential changes to the next request for proposals (RFP). Council Member Fajardo suggested starting the review early to avoid a rushed process before the contract expires in 2027.
Vice Mayor Mary Solorio and other council members emphasized the review should not be a vehicle for micromanaging operational staff but rather should study contract-level issues and recommend changes for the RFP and services. The council agreed the committee could be broadened later to cover related municipal service contracts (such as street sweeping and tree/landscape maintenance) and to present recommendations to the full council.
Council directed staff to return with an implementation plan for the ad hoc and to schedule the first meeting in the coming month.
