During public comment at Tuesday’s Shelton City Council meeting, a resident urged the city to adopt a no-camping ordinance for public spaces and to relocate a mobile outreach truck currently near Brewer Park.
The speaker referenced a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision on public spaces and said Shelton should follow other cities that adopted no-camping ordinances. The resident asserted, "Public spaces should serve the public, not become informal settlements that compromise health, safety, and economic vitality," and described vehicles and RVs near bridges and city streets as a continuation of the issue at Brewer Park.
The speaker criticized the placement of a social-services truck near Brewer Park, saying social services should be provided in a "dignified professional environment, not from roadside steps that inadvertently validate transient living in public spaces." The speaker urged directing people in need toward structured assistance such as housing programs, addiction treatment and mental-health services.
Council received the comments during the public-comment period; no formal action was taken, and no staff presentation followed. An unidentified council member later thanked the speaker for raising concerns.
