Centerville extends gun-range lease for three months while final agreement is written

The Centerville City Council approved a three-month extension of the gun-range lease to allow staff and the Centerville Small Arms Association more time to finalize remediation, insurance and scheduling terms for a longer lease.
The Centerville City Council voted unanimously June 17 to extend its lease with the Centerville Small Arms Association for three months, giving staff and the association time to finish a written lease and remediation planning.
City staff said the additional time will be used to finalize a remediation quote for lead cleanup, resolve insurance details and put operational clarifications into the contract, including a business plan the association submitted and an improved scheduling approach.
“We've been working closely with the association to hammer out a lease, and it's taken longer than we thought,” the police chief said during the council discussion. The chief said the association had submitted a business plan with “a lot of great ideas of increasing signage” and calendar changes to reduce rule-breaking and scheduling conflicts.
Brad Rasmussen, who identified himself as a board member of the Centerville Small Arms Association, told the council the association wants to work with the police department and offers a local facility where people can receive firearms safety training. “Working with the police department and trying to get everyone on the same page so we're communicating better, I think is really important,” Rasmussen said.
Council members said they had better confidence in the association's proposals than in past years and moved to adopt Amendment No. 4 of the lease, which extends the agreement through Sept. 30, 2025. The motion carried by unanimous voice vote.
No details were adopted tonight regarding a permanent remediation budget or who will pay for eventual cleanup; staff said the extension provides time to finish cost estimates and write the lease.
The council did not discuss any changes to range operations beyond the elements described by staff and the association; official operational rules and remediation responsibilities will be addressed in the written lease to be returned to the council for approval if required.
