City staff told the Papillion City Council on June 17 that the groundbreaking for the City Park project is scheduled for Monday, June 23 at 1 p.m. City Administrator Miss Powers said the city plans to seek approval of the guaranteed maximum price (GMP) at the July 15 council meeting, with demolition and site preparation to occur in August and full project completion targeted for May 2026.
Miss Powers presented the administrator’s report and provided usage figures and other park updates: Papio Bay recorded more than 14,000 visitors this season so far; roughly 270 children have attended summer day camp to date; and 132 athletic games were scheduled in the coming six days. Staff also said design work is underway for an expansion and renovation of Papio Bay, and that phase 2 of City Park will include an inclusive playground at Halleck.
Parks staff present, including Tony Gowan and Tracy Stratman, noted a successful Papillion Days event and encouraged public attendance at the groundbreaking. Miss Powers said a debrief will be held later in the week and invited council feedback. The council did not take formal action on the construction timeline at the meeting beyond scheduling the GMP consideration for July 15.
