Auburn City Council on June 17 approved a set of land-use decisions including rezoning about 15.5 acres at Beehive Road and Biltmore Lane from rural to industrial and several conditional uses affecting residential, industrial and utility land uses.
Mayor Ron Anders summarized the council’s actions, saying the council approved a conditional use for a 38-townhome performance residential development at 1908 Opelika Road (on a private drive called Duke Circle) and approved a conditional-use expansion at 272 Technology Parkway for KFT Alabama, which will add 26,000 square feet to its existing 89,000-square-foot facility.
The council also approved a conditional use to allow an electric utility substation at 1515 Shug Jordan Parkway to be used by Alabama Power, and it denied an additional-use request for a proposed United Rentals distribution location at 2490 South College Street. The council rezoned approximately 15.5 acres at Beehive Road and Biltmore Lane from rural to industrial.
The council denied unanimous consent for a rezoning on about 10 acres on the west side of Wrights Mill Road, just south of Interstate 85, and the mayor said that item will appear again on the July agenda. That denial of unanimous consent prevented immediate approval and effectively postponed action to a later meeting.
Why it matters: the approvals affect housing supply, industrial development and local utility infrastructure; the denied and postponed items mean decisions on some proposed changes will return for further council consideration.
Background and next steps: the council’s approvals were presented as conditional uses and rezoning actions; the Wrights Mill Road rezoning will be reconsidered at a future meeting. Mayor Anders provided the summary of each action and the locations involved.
