On June 17 the El Segundo City Council voted 3–1 to temporarily reauthorize permit parking on the north side of Mariposa Avenue between Illinois Court and Kansas Street as part of Preferential Parking Zone 3 through Dec. 31, 2025 or until construction concludes.
Staff explained that fiber‑optic installation along Mariposa had complicated curbside parking and that permits would otherwise expire at year’s end; the staff recommendation was to temporarily return the northern Mariposa segment to Zone 3 while construction is underway so residents can obtain permits. Councilmember Giroux moved the measure; Councilmember Boyle seconded. The roll call showed Giroux, Boyle and Mayor Pro Tem Baldino voting yes; Mayor Pimentel voted no.
Council debate touched on whether permit programs create private access to public streets and whether extending permits to Illinois Court residents should be included; councilmembers agreed the program was intended to address abusive commercial or airport‑parking uses rather than create permanent private privileges. Mayor Pimentel said he opposed the temporary expansion. The motion passed; staff will administer permits through the end of the year and return to normal zone boundaries after construction and permit-cycle resets next year.
