The El Segundo City Council approved amendments to agreements with Swoop Incorporated and Lyft Incorporated for transportation services through fiscal year 2025–2026.
During the June 17 discussion, council members asked about utilization rates for the beach shuttle and Lyft services. Recreation/transportation staff said the beach shuttle began service the previous Monday and that ridership trends from last year showed declines, likely because more people are using e‑bikes. Staff said they will conduct targeted counts at prime stops this summer and expect to reassess frequencies and stops.
Staff reported rising usage of the Lyft program: a staff member identified as Ryan said the Lyft service is “well over 500 rides each month,” driven in part by riders booking through the Lyft app with a geofenced invitation code that provides subsidized fares. Staff also said Dial‑A‑Ride medical trips have increased under the Lyft model, enabling the city to serve multiple riders on a trip rather than one at a time.
Council approved the contract amendments by roll call. Staff said they will return with utilization counts and recommendations for the shuttle program after summer data collection.
