Pittsylvania County supervisors reviewed a proposal on June 17 to raise monthly compensation for members of the Board of Supervisors and discussed placing the item on the business meeting agenda for formal action before the July 1 statutory deadline.
Mr. Evans, a staff member who summarized the relevant state code, told the board that two Virginia Code provisions govern how a board may set its own pay and that the board has discretion to adopt compensation under Va. Code § 15.2-1414.2 and § 15.2-1414.3. He said the board has historically operated under the statutory schedule and had not increased compensation in many years.
The proposal presented to the board would set monthly compensation at $1,500 for members, $1,650 for the vice chairman and $1,850 for the chairman, with any change to take effect Jan. 1, 2026, and to be revisited annually. Board members who sit on the finance committee said money for the increase has already been included in the board budget line for the coming year.
Supervisors debated process and public perception. Mr. Dudley said he would move to place the change on the consent agenda, while Mr. Bowman objected to using the consent agenda and said the public is entitled to full notice; the county attorney’s office advised that a motion would be needed at the business meeting to set compensation for future years. Several supervisors framed the increase as a modest step to make service more feasible for future candidates and to align pay with neighboring localities.
No formal motion or vote was taken during the work session; board members agreed the matter should be placed on the business meeting agenda for a formal motion and vote prior to the July 1 statutory timing requirement.
