Treasurer Will Mail Expanded Delinquent-Tax Notices; Staff Reviewing Mobile-Home Title Issues

Granite County Treasurer Ashley told commissioners the office will mail an updated delinquent-tax notice next week that lists all years delinquent, penalties and interest to encourage payment. Notices will be sent in an envelope marked “Urgent” and will highlight the full amount due and a June 30 date for penalties and interest calculation.
Treasurer Ashley and staff discussed follow-up steps for accounts where taxpayers no longer own the mobile or trailer or where title transfers were not completed at sale. County staff said older trailer/mobile cases sometimes require Department of Revenue procedures or specific Montana Code Annotated (MCA) processes for seizure and sale; staff will append relevant statutory citations and MCA references to notices where applicable.
Commissioners asked for clarity about whether personal property versus real property tax remedies differ; staff said they will research which delinquencies can be pursued through tax lien/tax-deed processes, noting that motor-vehicle/title issues and older mobile homes often require separate Department of Revenue filings. Treasurer Ashley agreed to update the commission after mailings and after initial collections are assessed toward an August 1 review date.
Staff also said they will mark notices with a clear “urgent” stamp and may add MCA references to indicate the county’s legal options for collections. The board did not take a formal vote but directed the treasurer’s office to mail the expanded notices and report back on collection results.
