County authorizes Fendon Access online payments for court cases; fee passed to defendants

The Walker County Commissioners Court approved June 16 a plan to implement an online payments option for criminal and traffic cases using the Fendon Access software integrated with the Tyler case-management system.
A court office staff member explained the change would eliminate the county's existing traffic payment setup in the case-management system, reduce errors where payments are routed to the wrong court, and let defendants make payments directly through Tyler. "This specifically would eliminate the traffic payment that we currently have set up on the case management. We have a lot of issues with that, people paying the wrong courts," the staff member said.
The vendor's fees will be charged to defendants rather than the county; staff said the county would still retain the credit-card machines for recordkeeping and for non-case-management transactions. The change will affect the county clerk, district clerk and all four justice of the peace offices. The court approved implementation contingent on the county attorney's review; staff said the county attorney had reviewed the documents and did not object.
The court approved the software adoption by voice vote.
Staff said the integration will reduce staff time spent processing misdirected payments and improve recordkeeping by having payments recorded directly in the case-management system.
