Commissioners discussed that the perk was longstanding and raised practical concerns about tracking and tax reporting. After deliberation, a motion was made to end the perk “starting now.” The motion was seconded and recorded; commissioners confirmed the change in the meeting.
No replacement benefit or alternative compensation was announced during the meeting. Commissioners noted their view that county employees are underpaid and that removing the perk would avoid additional taxable fringe-benefit complexity. The county did not provide an implementation timeline for staff to enforce the change or guidance for employees at the June 9 meeting.
