Board approves plan to build/improve baseball and softball fields at Clayton, Dilworth and Rosewood Park

The Salt Lake City School District board approved Tuesday a plan to build or improve baseball and softball fields at Dilworth and Clayton (to serve Highland High) and at Rosewood Park (to serve West High), a package district staff said would cost about $4.5 million in preliminary estimates.
Isaac Astell, staff member, summarized site work and city coordination. He said Rosewood Park already contains public restrooms, an existing baseball field and a cricket field; the district would add a new softball field and perform targeted infield and fencing repairs. Astell said partnering with the city’s parks department reduces cost because the city already maintains irrigation and restrooms and can permit booster-club vending in ways that ease event logistics.
Astell gave preliminary cost estimates: Clayton — about $1.5 million; Dilworth — reduced to about $2.0 million after scope revisions; Rosewood and other adjustments — remaining portion to total roughly $4.5 million. He said earlier planning that included Glendale had produced a larger overall estimate near $9.5 million; the current package reflects changes informed by community feedback and city collaboration. Astell noted field-condition problems (for example, shallow irrigation issues and goose-head irrigation damage) that require thorough repairs.
Several board members praised the interagency collaboration and asked for more regular, itemized updates on field work, funding and temporary site plans to prevent repeated rework. Board member Amanda Longwell asked the district to present a broader athletics facilities plan so the board could see long-term field needs and avoid repeatedly redoing work. The board moved the item to action and approved the recommendation in a roll-call vote recorded as: Ashley Anderson — yes; Brian Jensen — yes; Amanda Longwell — yes; Bryce Williams — yes; Charlotte Fife Jefferson — yes; Nate Salazar — yes; Mohammed — yes. The motion passed.
District staff said they plan monthly updates on capital work and to develop a multiyear facilities plan for athletics fields to bring back to the board.
