The Oklahoma City Arts Commission received an update June 16 on "When the Earth Remembers," a public-art project the commission previously placed with artist Addison Karl.
Leandre Lattimore, public art project manager, said the selection committee had asked Karl to advance one concept that fits within the existing $50,000 budget. "At the time, the artist presented 2 concepts, 1 that could be achieved with the $50,000 budget and 1 that will cost significantly more," Lattimore said. The commission and staff agreed to proceed with the lower-cost concept, which will be titled Bones of the Plains, a Bridal of Memory.
Lattimore said staff are pursuing a grant to supplement the $50,000 budget; if that grant is not secured, staff will continue seeking other funding sources. "We intend to proceed with an agreement on July 1 at City Council with this proposed project and this proposed site," Lattimore said, adding that if additional funding is later obtained, staff could amend the agreement to expand the scope.
Staff also noted the chosen site was selected for both pedestrian access and visibility from canal boats, allowing the work to be viewed from the water as well as on foot. No formal vote was taken at the Arts Commission meeting; staff described next steps as advancing the agreement to City Council and pursuing grant funding to potentially enhance the project.
