Duvall Depot Building closed for asbestos abatement after water-line failure

City engineer Larissa Grinnell reported to the Duvall City Council on June 17 that a broken toilet fill line in May caused a water leak at the Depot Building that damaged flooring and some wall areas. Staff began demolition and remediation work on Friday, June 13, including mold abatement.
Grinnell said laminate flooring tested positive for asbestos, requiring special demolition procedures. Reconstruction will follow abatement and be managed through the city’s insurance carrier; the city’s deductible for the claim is $5,000. No firm timeline was given in the meeting for full re-opening; staff said repairs would occur after abatement is complete.
Grinnell added the YMCA summer day camp will use the Rose Room and an adjacent small office for storage while the Depot is repaired. Council and staff said they planned to take the repair work as an opportunity to refresh the Depot’s interior to a historically sympathetic finish while remaining mindful of budgetary constraints.
