The youth advisory body, organized by the Youth Commission and chaired by Jackie Tamer, includes 18 members from seventh through eleventh grades who applied and were selected earlier in the school year. ‘‘Who understands the needs of the youth better than the youth themselves?’’ Kevin O’Reilly said, arguing that direct student input can strengthen planning for youth‑focused programs.
O’Reilly said the committee assisted the Youth Commission this year and is expected to take a larger role in the coming year, including helping with exemplary service awards and a job and volunteer fair. The mayor invited committee members present to join him for a photograph after the council’s brief remarks.
The council did not take formal action; this item was a ceremonial recognition and an introduction of committee members to the public record.
