Elmhurst mourns police K‑9 Ozzy; mayor cites hundreds of deployments and multiple seizures

During the announcement the mayor described Ozzy’s record in detail: he had served the department for five and a half years and had been deployed on more than 350 incidents, including tracking missing people and fleeing suspects. "He served our department for 5 and a half years," the mayor said. The mayor said Ozzy’s deployments contributed to about 150 arrests, the recovery of seven illegal handguns, the seizure of approximately $500,000 in cash and the retrieval of roughly 10.5 kilograms of fentanyl, about 4.5 grams of cocaine and about 200 grams of heroin. Lab results confirmed Ozzy had an aggressive vascular cancer affecting the spleen, heart and liver, city remarks said.
The mayor thanked Ozzy “for all the [he’s] given to Elmhurst” and said the canine helped make Elmhurst "one of the safest communities in the state of Illinois." The mayor also extended condolences to Officer Capitelli and his family.
No formal action was taken; the announcement was made as part of the mayor’s remarks early in the meeting.
