City Council members serving on the nominating committee interviewed more than a dozen applicants for volunteer boards and recommended a slate of nominees for the Fayetteville Arts Council while also forwarding a housing authority nominee to the full City Council for appointment.
The committee, chaired for the meeting by Council member Sarah Bunch, met in hybrid format and heard applicants for the Environmental Action Committee (EAC), the Walton Arts Center board, the Fayetteville Arts Council and the Fayetteville Housing Authority (FHA). Applicants described their backgrounds and what they would contribute if appointed. Darlington, an applicant for the EAC, said “clean air is a fundamental human right,” noting his academic training and experience with air-quality research. Justin, seeking reappointment to a Walton Arts Center board seat, emphasized building partnerships between the Walton Arts Center and the city to expand programming and use new facilities such as the Porter Warehouse. Several Arts Council applicants described their work as practicing artists and arts administrators and said they wanted to expand access and programming across the cultural corridor.
After interviews and deliberations the committee agreed to forward this slate to the full City Council for appointment: Chloe Bell (resident at large), Diana Galinde (resident at large), Natasha Devone (working artist), and Elizabeth Muscari (working artist). The committee also moved to forward the Fayetteville Housing Authority nominee, Diana Nathan, to the Council; members voted in favor and the motion carried unanimously at the end of the meeting. Committee members said they will present the slate and the FHA recommendation to the full City Council at the next council meeting; applicants were told they can watch that meeting or contact the city clerk’s office to learn whether they were appointed.
Committee members said they weigh experience, attendance, discipline mix and community reach when recommending board nominees. Several applicants pointed to outreach and inclusivity as priorities; for example, an Arts Council applicant who works at the Community Creative Center described gallery hops and transit-linked events that connect multiple galleries and local artists.
The nominating committee handles initial vetting and then forwards its recommended slate to the full City Council for the official appointment vote. Members said they will send the slate and the FHA recommendation to the council as soon as scheduling allows and urged applicants to watch the council meeting or contact the clerk’s office for results.
