Laramie County School District 1 schedules June 30 special meeting to consider gun policy after House Bill 172

Laramie County School District #1’s board of trustees scheduled a special meeting for June 30 to consider a draft district policy implementing changes required by House Bill 172, the board chair said, and the public comment period on the draft closes Friday.
The policy matters because House Bill 172 takes effect July 1 and will change who may carry firearms on school property; the board must decide whether to adopt the draft policy as a permanent rule that night or to adopt an emergency rule to take immediate effect while additional changes are circulated for further review.
During public comment, Patricia McCoy, a parent who described herself as “a steadfast advocate for the Second Amendment,” urged the board to implement the law in a way that “empowers” responsible staff and volunteers rather than creating barriers. “This new law offers us an opportunity, not a burden,” McCoy said.
District legal counsel told the board that if trustees have no amendments they may adopt the policy as a permanent rule on June 30; if the board seeks changes that would require another 45-day public review, the board may instead adopt the policy on an emergency basis so it would be in effect for up to 120 days while revisions are considered. The board chair said legal staff will compile public comments and provide them to trustees in time for the June 30 meeting.
No vote on the policy itself was taken at the meeting; the board set the special session as the venue for a decision. The chair said the board expects full attendance for the June 30 discussion.
If the board adopts an emergency rule on June 30, it would allow the district to have a policy in place on July 1 while the board pursues any additional review or edits, legal counsel explained. The board did not specify any proposed amendments at this meeting.
