DUI task force plan approved; funding targets enforcement, education and school outreach

Park County commissioners approved the DUI Task Force plan May 27 to guide prevention, education and limited enforcement funding for the coming year.
Travis Orton, health department director, said the plan draws on a Montana Department of Transportation template and documents recent accomplishments including server training, outreach posters at bars and a distracted-driving demonstration at Park High School. The plan’s budget earmarks roughly $7,000 for high-visibility enforcement overtime, plus training and education supplies. Orton said much of the budget is funded from DUI-related revenues and Department of Transportation sources used to support local DUI prevention.
Commissioners and task-force partners noted prior year accomplishments and the importance of high-visibility enforcement combined with prevention education. Commissioner Waltz described the issue as a personal priority given local crash history. The board approved the plan by voice vote; staff will implement the outreach, enforcement overtime and school programming described in the plan and report back on outcomes.
