County signs MOU to extend weed monitoring partnership with MSU extension and PCEC

Park County commissioners on May 27 approved a memorandum of understanding between the Park County Environmental Council (PCEC) and Montana State University (MSU) Extension to continue a weed monitoring and treatment-efficacy program through the summer and into the end of the year.
Jackie from MSU Extension described the agreement as an extension of an existing arrangement supporting monitoring for Noxious Weed Trust Fund grants, training for landowners and treatment-efficacy monitoring. The county provides office space and computers; PCEC provides insurance and compensation for the position.
Public commenters asked how this role interacts with the county weed-control officer. Jackie and commenters clarified that the extension position (Bethany Allen) and the county weed-control officer (Teresa) work closely; the MSU Extension role focuses on monitoring, reporting for grant compliance and providing tools and training for landowners to perform monitoring themselves.
Commissioners said monitoring improves reporting quality for grant funding and benefits farmers, ranchers and habitat management. The board approved the MOU by voice vote; the extension will continue monitoring, grant reporting and community education activities funded through the partnership.
