The Mississippi Department of Marine Resources briefed the commission June 17 that 195 derelict-vessel cases had been reported; of those, staff said 169 vessels had been removed, 26 cases were pending, and eight had received court orders for removal.
"We have a 100 and, 95 derelict vessel cases that have been reported. 169 have been removed, 26 are pending, and 8 have received court orders to to remove as we speak right now," the director reported.
The department's law-enforcement chief provided enforcement statistics for May and said Memorial Day weekend saw robust patrols and compliance. The chief reported five boating-under-the-influence (BUI) citations over the holiday weekend, checked over 3,500 people, and cited 16 violations for failure to apply tails and scales (a reporting/measurement requirement referenced in the briefing). The chief characterized overall compliance as strong and said the agency will continue enforcement through upcoming holidays.
Commissioners praised the patrol presence and noted that higher check rates during holiday weekends likely contribute to compliance.
The department also discussed marking and reporting for a partially submerged shrimp-boat wreck near the Davis Bayou entrance; a commissioner asked marine patrol to follow up.
