Mosinee board fills vacancy after candidate forum; appointment recorded and oath administered

The Mosinee School District Board of Education heard statements from candidates and then appointed a replacement for a vacant board seat at its June 17 meeting.

The board opened a candidate forum and each applicant answered questions about their background, reasons for seeking the seat and their vision for the Mosinee School District. Candidates who spoke included Gary Crawford (public commenter), Joe Nadler, Dana Laird, Nelson Pauschon, Nicole Wilson, Quinn Sandler, Nick Thompson and others. Each candidate spoke about their professional and community experience and their priorities for students.

Following the forum and an internal tally of board member preferences, the board took a motion to appoint a candidate to the vacancy. A motion to appoint was made, seconded and carried by roll-call vote. The newly appointed member then took the oath of office at the meeting.

Discussion: candidates addressed topics including academic standards, individualized instruction, career and technical education, teacher retention and community engagement. For example, Joe Nadler said his vision is “that every child is given the opportunity to achieve both their academic and career potential.” Nick Thompson emphasized expanding STEM and computer science opportunities. Nicole Wilson highlighted career and alternative pathways and teacher retention. Quinn Sandler and others emphasized community ties and extracurricular programs.

Decision: following the nomination and roll-call vote, the board administered the oath to the appointed candidate, who accepted and thanked the board.

The board said the appointed member will serve until the next election in April, when the seat will be on the ballot.
