The San Juan County Commission on June 17 approved an equipment‑exchange agreement with Blanding City that allows the city to dispose of construction demolition waste at the county landfill in return for an old backhoe, which the county will use at the LaSalle Transfer Station.
Jed (county presenter) said the arrangement grew from an earlier city request asking the county to waive disposal fees. County staff negotiated a swap so the county receives the backhoe rather than waiving fees to a single city, which county staff described as a replicable, ‘‘win‑win’’ arrangement. The county will accept commercial demolition waste from Blanding City under the terms described and the Blanding City Council was set to finalize the city’s approval on the following Tuesday.
Commissioners praised department staff and the city for negotiating a local solution. County staff noted that the city is separately advertising for contractors to haul demolition materials; the county’s approval covers acceptance of that waste at the landfill in exchange for equipment and does not change broader county fee policy.
Commissioners approved the agreement by voice vote. The motion passed with all present voting in favor.
