County staff explained the county received a grant in about 2023 that has approximately $30,000 available to send three students to a paramedic class. Under the program as presented, the county would place each sponsored participant under a three‑year contract that begins on the first day of the paramedic class: the training year plus two years of continued employment with the county. The contract includes a repayment requirement if the employee leaves or is not in good standing during the training or the two‑year follow‑up period.
Staff said the training program starts in July and lasts about a year; the grant allows reimbursements for certification costs through December 2026. The commissioners supported the sponsorship as an investment in local emergency services and approved the motion to fund the program using the available grant money.
The commission recorded a motion and second to approve the sponsorship and a voice vote in favor was taken during the meeting. Staff said they will execute contracts with participants to document the three‑year employment commitment and the repayment terms in the event of noncompliance.
