Newfields School committee reviews three driveway and safety concepts, tasks staff to get cost and regulatory details

The Newfields School District facilities group reviewed three conceptual designs to change the school driveway, student drop-off pattern, crosswalk location and site paving and agreed to gather technical and cost information before making a recommendation.

Committee members discussed three numbered concepts: Option 1, a “bare bones” plan keeping the one-way loop largely as-is and using existing stairs; Option 2, described as the least invasive, that widens the existing driveway slightly, moves the crosswalk and adds some parking; and Option 3, the most extensive, that creates a wider entrance (described variously as a double-wide or two-lane approach), relocates the crosswalk to the front of the building, and would remove on-driveway parking and instead rely on a rear parking area. The group did not adopt any of the concepts at the meeting.

Why it matters: the concepts affect daily arrival and dismissal patterns for students (including kindergarten through second grade), buses and parents; they raise questions about ADA access to the building, snow-plowing and winter use, pedestrian safety at the state road entrance, property setbacks near neighboring homes, and potential costs that might require a budget appropriation or bond in the future.
