District welding and MEMS additions near completion; $5.7 million grant funded programs are full

Scott Wagner of Regency provided the Lakewood Board of Education an on-site construction update on June 16, saying interior finishes at the Franklin School of Opportunity and the MEMS addition are in advanced stages and the projects remain on track for early August completion.
Wagner said fire alarm, casework and much of the HVAC, lighting, above-ceiling mechanical work and interior glass are installed. The welding addition will receive fume-extraction equipment, specialized ductwork and welding gases; a trench drain and welding booths are being installed. The MEMS space has rooftop HVAC units, additional conditioning and a window film for glass areas. Wagner noted some additional floor preparation slowed parts of the schedule but did not change the early August target for substantial completion.
Superintendent (name not specified in transcript) told the board both new programs — MEMS and the welding program — are “both full,” and that the district secured a $5,700,000 grant to provide the opportunities. The superintendent said Lakewood was the only district in Ohio awarded the MEMS program and complimented staff for preparing competitive applications on a short timeline.
Board members asked whether the specialized air-handling systems would be ready for the school year; Wagner replied the welding addition has dedicated air-handling and fume-extraction systems and the MEMS spaces have added heating and cooling support. When asked about readiness for the first day of school, Wagner said, “It’ll be done for school,” and that teachers would have time to move in.
Wagner also described Building D scope work including floor abatement and locker-room and restroom renovations to be completed over the summer. The district will install a small elevator to access the second floor of the welding addition and complete final HVAC hookups, controls and loose furnishings prior to opening.
Board members praised the work and the teams involved. The superintendent credited the planning work that enabled the district to apply successfully for state grant funding and to implement the new career-technical programs.
