Marshall County adds paving segments, authorizes sending projects to council for funding

Marshall County commissioners on Monday approved adding several road segments to the county's current paving program and authorized forwarding the list to the county council for funding consideration.
Jason of the county highway department reported crews started chip-and-seal work May 29 and said, "as of the sixteenth, we've estimated to do 42 center lane miles sealed. That's around 14 total miles, due to the fact that those are triple chipping seals." He supplied a cost breakdown for the chip-and-seal work:
- Emulsion: $416,659.74 - Lines: $83,104.00 - Elevens: $42,144.80 - Total: $541,908.54
Commissioners discussed additional paving segments that were included in the original Community Crossings bidding package but not yet approved for construction. The list discussed included named roads such as King, Lakeaway, US 30/9A, Ninth Road sections, Quail Ridge, Kenilworth and others (detailed list provided to commissioners). Jason said the additional projects are cost-advantageous when contractors are already mobilized on nearby Community Crossings jobs.
Commissioners moved and seconded a motion to send the additional projects to the county council for consideration and possible funding; the motion passed by voice vote.
Why it matters: Adding segments could expedite repairs while contractors are on site and avoid separate setup costs. Commissioners emphasized the additions remain contingent on council funding.
Other highway items: The board approved multiple utility permits for fiber/conduit installations from internet providers (BSM Group, Troyer Group, Surf Internet) and received updates on Mill Pond Dam pipe lining and EV charging-station electrical work.
Meeting note: Commissioners approved the highway program changes by voice vote and instructed staff to present the added projects and estimated costs to the county council for appropriation.
