District forms committee to implement new state rules on student use of internet-enabled devices

The South Huntington Board heard an update on a newly formed committee charged with producing a district policy on student use of internet-enabled devices. The committee includes board members, students, central office staff, SHA representatives, teachers’ union representatives, nurses, custodial/facilities staff, food services, transportation, and parents.
Miss Kavanaugh, who led the committee’s work, told the board the group used a template policy as a starting point and customized it for the district. She said the policy will be ready for board review on July 8 so the district can meet the state’s adoption deadline. The administration said it will communicate policy changes to the public over the summer.
Board members thanked the broad set of volunteers and emphasized the need to finalize details on storage, permitted uses, and operational implementation. The board noted that state law left limited discretion on some specifics and that the committee focused its work on local decisions such as storage, access and communications with families.
The board scheduled three summer meetings (July 8, Aug. 6 and Aug. 20), with the July 8 meeting identified as the target date for the committee’s policy to come before the board.
