Board names Walt Whitman junior Lucy Maniatis as student ex officio board member

The South Huntington Board of Education voted to appoint Lucy Maniatis, a junior at Walt Whitman High School, as the district’s ex officio student board member. The board moved and approved the appointment during its meeting; the motion was made by Mister Bronson and seconded by Mister Scribe.
Board members said they moved the appointment earlier in the year because a new state law now requires a student ex officio board member and regulations required the district to adopt the position by the end of the year. The administration said Maniatis will be able to join board work during the summer months and will serve according to the state’s requirements for ex officio student members.
Members described Maniatis’s experience at Walt Whitman — leadership in theater and music, president roles, work in marine biology and travel club organization — and said those activities would help her contribute to board discussions. The appointment was approved by voice vote.
There were no formal conditions attached to the appointment in the action on the record; the board noted the student position is for one year, traditionally held by a senior when the district ran a voluntary program, and that state law now mandates the position.
