Beresford council authorizes Chamber free swim, first‑responders pool night and weekend parks staffing for tournaments

The Beresford City Council on Monday approved several parks and recreation items: a free daytime swim for the Chamber of Commerce on July 26, an evening pool night for first responders on Aug. 3, and authorization for the parks supervisor to flex staff schedules so personnel can work weekend tournaments at the Northfields.
Mayor Sealy opened the items and council members moved and approved the requests. The Chamber representative asked for a free swim during Old Fashioned Days on July 26; the council authorized the day program to operate 1–5 p.m. and resume normal evening operations. "Free swim Saturday" was requested by the Chamber and supported by council discussion about prior practice and expected demand.
Council also approved closing the pool to the public for an evening on Sunday, Aug. 3, to allow first responders to use the facility for a private event. "They would be closed just for the families of those involved," a council member said when describing the first‑responders event.
Related to managing larger tournaments at the new Northfields complex, the council voted to let city parks supervisor Kelly Heche flex staff schedules so one or two personnel can substitute weekend work for weekday shifts on a voluntary basis. The mayor and council discussed equipment familiarity and safety, noting the city recently purchased a Ventrac groomer and that trained staff improve field maintenance and guest experience. "If you've got somebody that is using that equipment that is used to using it, I think it's a better thing," a council member said.
The parks committee also presented two finalists for the new complex's name. The council chose "Volunteer Park" to honor current and past volunteer coaches and to create an opportunity for an annual volunteer recognition. The council discussed sponsorship opportunities for signs and concession stands and noted volunteer contributions at recent tournaments.
Council actions on parks items were approvals by motion; the approvals did not create new budget line items at the meeting. The council also noted seasonal hiring updates, including approval to hire Caitlin Ellis as a pool attendant.
