Council approves Smyrna Preparatory School move into R-15 zoned King Springs Road site

The Smyrna Mayor and Council on June 16 unanimously authorized Smyrna Preparatory School to relocate to a 5.08-acre property on King Springs Road in Ward 6, a parcel zoned R-15 that requires mayor-and-council approval for schools.

Rusty Martin, the city's community development director, told the council the request would give the school "the opportunity to move into that location" but that final operation would depend on meeting egress, fire safety and business-license requirements. "This is only to give them the ability to move in," Martin said.

Representatives from the applicant thanked city staff and the fire marshals for collaborative work. One applicant said, "we appreciate all the work the city's done," and expressed a desire for a long-term presence in Smyrna.

Councilman Tim Gould moved approval; Councilmember Lindley seconded. Ms. Hines, participating remotely, voted in the affirmative; the council recorded a unanimous vote and approved the request.

City staff noted additional inspections and permitting will be required before a business license is issued and school operations begin. No changes to the zoning category were made; this action is an approval permitted under the city's R-15 zoning rules for school uses.

The council offered congratulations and welcomed the school to Smyrna pending completion of required safety and licensing steps.
