Committee approves demolition contract for city-owned former Waffle House at 185 Oxmoor Road

Homewood’s committee approved a contract to demolish the city-owned building at 185 Oxmoor Road, the former Waffle House, and to scrape the lot for $28,075.
Wyatt Pew presented the contract and told the committee he had a price from Grama Demolition of $28,075 and that the company had already signed the contract pending council approval. “I have a price from Grama Demolition to do over that building for $28.07 50,” Pew said.
City staff explained funding would come partly from the city’s demolition line item ($25,000) with $3,750 from the mayor’s discretionary fund to complete the total contract price. Committee members approved the motion by voice vote, recorded as 5–0.
Pew said the contractor will disconnect utilities, demolish the building and scrape the lot; the contractor will not remove all existing asphalt as part of this immediate work and the slab will remain until future parking lot construction, including sidewalk work, takes place. Staff said subsequent site work could remove the slab when the city prepares the parking lot and sidewalks.
The committee approved the motion to authorize the mayor to sign the demolition contract; staff will coordinate timing and communication with nearby businesses during demolition.
