Board approves transfer of four public-safety vehicles, donates one to Prince of Peace SRO program

Madison — The Board of Public Works and Safety voted June 16 to transfer four used public-safety vehicles among city departments and to donate a 2017 Ford Explorer to the School Resource Officer program at Prince of Peace.
The action, adopted as Resolution 2025-33b, authorizes transfers between the Madison Police Department, the Fire Department and the Madison Regional Airport and provides one vehicle to the Prince of Peace SRO program, a partnership the board said is funded by the school.
Board members said the donation will allow the school’s SRO to use a dedicated vehicle on campus. A resident, Stephanie Hellman of 747 West Third Street, asked whether Prince of Peace already has an SRO and whether officers normally come with a vehicle. Hellman asked, “Don't they come with a car when they go to the school?” The board member presenting the resolution replied, “No. We've provided vehicles as well to the other to Madison Consolidated High School, and this is a new program for Prince and Peace. They are funding the full cost of their officer there at the school, and they've approached us about 1 of our used police vehicles. So we're donating that for their SRO to utilize.”
Board member David Carlo announced he would abstain from voting on the donation because his wife is employed by Prince of Peace. That abstention was recorded before the board took its final vote. The board then approved the resolution; the motion to approve was seconded and carried with one abstention.
The resolution text lists the donated vehicle as a 2017 Ford Explorer and describes three other interdepartmental transfers; the board did not discuss additional specific vehicle model years or mileage during the meeting.
The board did not attach conditions to the donation in the public discussion. No public speaker objected to the transfer during the meeting.
Mayor Bob Courtney and board staff did not give an implementation timeline during the meeting but indicated the transfers and the donation are administrative actions flowing from the resolution.
The board approved the resolution by voice vote; the abstention by Carlo was noted for the record.
