A resident told the Jeffersontown City Council she and her family visit Veterans Park several times weekly and that children riding pedal and motorized bicycles are using playground equipment and riding through the play area, creating safety concerns.
"We are frequent visitors there probably 3 times a week, but it's getting really bad with kids on bicycles ... Riding on the playground equipment and through the playground, and parents just letting them have free will," resident Carla said during public comment. Carla said the problem is especially bad on Saturday evenings.
Parks staff and council members said the city had previously posted a sign prohibiting motorized vehicles on sidewalks and grass but that the sign is one among many rules and may be too small or not obvious. "We did inform the families about that. It's just the information of I just don't think people realize that," said Debbie, who reported that police had spoken with families after recent incidents. Council members discussed installing larger signs near the playground, adding a specific "no bikes on this equipment" notice, and increasing parks-staff or police presence during peak hours. Major Foreman, the acting police chief that week, was asked to consider patrols or other enforcement during busy times; the transcript records the mayor stating, "We'll try to monitor it."
No formal council action or ordinance change was recorded in the meeting transcript; the record shows staff and council direction to explore larger signage and to coordinate with police for increased monitoring. The transcript lists the busiest times as Saturday afternoons and evenings, roughly 2 p.m. to 8 p.m., and notes one instance where police responded and addressed a group of children on motorized bikes.
