Board renews USDA APHIS Wildlife Services contract for animal damage control

County staff described a longstanding contract relationship with USDA APHIS Wildlife Services that provides animal-damage-control services in Greenlee County. Staff said the county has contracted with USDA-affiliated providers for more than two decades and that the current local provider is Sterling Simpson.
Staff recommended continuing the contract for fiscal year 2026, noting the county’s contribution was roughly the same as last year (the presenter said the contract cost was a little over $2,000 last year). County staff emphasized that the contract preserves a county seat at program discussions and coordination on state and federal wildlife issues, including wolf-management topics.
A motion to enter into the USDA APHIS Wildlife Services contract for the next fiscal year was made, seconded and approved by voice vote. Board members asked staff to encourage the provider to operate countywide and to explore other partner contributions that might defray the county’s cost.
