The Nantucket Historic District Commission on June 17 approved a proposal to add a skirt to an existing roof walk at 27 Woodberry Lane, imposing details to prevent a flat, "painted-on" appearance and specifying natural red cedar as the finish.
Commissioners agreed that a skirt could help conceal an otherwise large hatch opening on the walk but voiced concern about heavy-looking skirts where dormers interrupt the skirt line. The HDC required that the skirt be inset from the posts by roughly 2'2a'' to 3'2a'' and specified natural-to-weather red cedar cladding. The board ordered that the skirt be shown as Exhibit A and that Angus prepare the drawing for staff review.
Commissioners voted 3-2 in favor; Commissioner Abby recorded the principal opposition and another member also voted no, leading to a narrow approval. The motion included the inset detail so the skirt reads as cladding behind the walk's posts rather than a flush board applied to the post face.
The HDC will require the exhibit and the inset detail be part of the COA; staff will verify the skirt material and setback at inspection.
The applicant may proceed once Exhibit A is submitted and the construction matches the approved detail.
