The council nominated and voted on a city-council appointment to the Chris Kinnel Market Board during Monday’s meeting.
After opening nominations, a councilor moved to nominate Matthew Snyder for a two-year term expiring June 30, 2027. Nominations were closed and the council voted; the motion passed with eight votes in favor and one abstention.
Councilors debated the appointment process and the mayor’s role. Several council members noted that under the market board’s bylaws the mayor formally appoints board members, so the council’s action constitutes a public nomination that the mayor would then act on. Councilor Locke and others discussed the option of changing city ordinances or bylaws in the future if the council wanted stronger statutory control over affiliate boards.
Council members described the nomination as the first step in a broader planned transition of the market board’s composition. Councilor Taylor summarized the intended multi-step change: add the council appointee now, appoint a second council-nominated member when the board chair steps down or a new CEO is hired, and eventually adjust bylaws so the board will include four council appointees and four mayoral appointees in the future.
The council’s nomination and vote were recorded; the council president noted the mayor will formally appoint the nominated person per the board’s bylaws.
