Newton County updates East Bloss 5 and 6 construction timelines; multiple projects ahead of schedule

Dr. Mike Barr provided the board with the monthly construction and East Bloss update, describing progress on East Bloss 5 projects and the start of East Bloss 6 work.
Barr said the final media center renovation at Rocky Plains Elementary is 99% complete and that West Newton Elementary’s roof replacement finished two months ahead of schedule; Oak Hill Elementary roofing was about 80% complete with summer work accelerating progress. The district began the final phase of carpet replacement and reported nearly half of remaining facilities completed, with expectation of finishing before the 2025–26 school year.
Gym-floor replacements began in early June with a target for July completion. Playground installations at Rocky Plains and Livingston were complete; Middle Ridge and Herd Mixon playground installations were scheduled for mid‑June and expected to finish before next school year. Barr also said restroom upgrades at Herd Mixon Elementary and the Newton County College and Career Academy STEM campus began June 5 and were progressing through demolition and rough‑in phases.
On East Bloss 6, Barr reported continued site grading and building pad preparation at Eastside, Alcovy and Newton High Schools with masonry work and concrete footings beginning. Exterior parking‑lot demolition and stormwater work were underway at East Newton Elementary to reconfigure student drop‑off. Barr said the contractor will provide monthly aerial photos to keep the board and public informed and that many projects are on track to finish ahead of schedule.
No board action was required; the update was informational and staff remained available for questions.
