Mount Vernon officials warn fireworks banned in city; violators face fines up to $1,000

Ricardo Gomez, with the Mount Vernon Fire Department, and Sergeant Walter Martinez of the Mount Vernon Police Department urged residents ahead of Fourth of July celebrations to avoid using fireworks inside Mount Vernon city limits, saying the city bans fireworks and violators could face fines and criminal charges.

"As we get closer to the fourth of July, we want to remind everyone that fireworks are banned within Mount Vernon city limits. This isn't just about noise. This is about safety," Gomez said, noting the city council has reviewed fireworks impacts over the last few years.

Gomez and Martinez said the ban reflects safety concerns after recent incidents. "The risks are real," Gomez said. Martinez cited specific past harms: "Last year, a citizen suffered serious injuries in a fireworks accident. We also had multiple vegetation fires in residential areas caused by fireworks. These incidents could have easily turned into much larger emergencies."

Martinez gave enforcement details: "If you're caught using selling fireworks within city limits, you could face fines up to $1,000 and possible misdemeanor charges." He directed residents to report illegal activity: "If you see illegal fireworks being used, report it to our non emergency line. Your call could prevent a fire, an injury or worse."

Officials encouraged residents to attend the city's professional display instead of using consumer fireworks. Gomez said, "The spectacular fireworks display begins at dark and Edgewater Park is the perfect spot to enjoy it all." He added: "There's plenty of space to spread out, relax with your family and enjoy the best view in town for a safe professional fireworks show."

The announcement emphasized protecting people, homes, pets and first responders and urged the public to "Celebrate smart. Celebrate safe. Celebrate together."
