Resident urges board to address fire-damaged house at 1570 Jefferson Road

A Hoffman Estates resident asked the Village Board on June 16 to intervene in what he described as a stalled reconstruction at 1570 Jefferson Road, a house he said has been vacant and uninhabitable since a February fire.
Joe Salorbi, a resident of 1580 Jefferson Road, told the board that a porta-potty and a large dumpster sit next to his property and that siding, insulation and Tyvek have blown onto his yard. “Nothing’s being done,” Salorbi said. “I don’t have any personal interest in this other than I’d like to see the neighborhood restored back to the same thing.”
Salorbi said he had spoken with the village permitting office and the property owner and described repeated inspections and slow progress. “My understanding…is that the permitting process wants to know every detail about the reconstruction of the interior of the house,” he said, adding that the permitting office told him that construction could take “a year or more.”
Salorbi asked whether the village could issue an emergency permit to re-side the house, noting that, in his account, the owner had previously received an emergency permit to replace the roof. He also said the village controls occupancy permits and suggested withholding occupancy until the site met requirements.
Mayor McLeod said the board would look into the matter and asked a staff member to collect Salorbi’s contact information. “Thank you, we’ll certainly look into that. Can you give Rachel, the lady sitting right there, she’ll get your phone number and we’ll contact you,” Mayor McLeod said.
The comment occurred during the public-comment period; no formal board action or motion on the property was recorded on the meeting agenda. The board’s clerk was asked to facilitate follow-up contact between staff and the resident.
Clarifying details mentioned in the public comment included the house address (1570 Jefferson Road), the neighbor’s address (1580 Jefferson Road), that the fire occurred in February, and the presence of a porta-potty and a large dumpster next to the property. Salorbi said windows had been reinstalled and that he believed an emergency roof permit had been issued previously, but he said siding and other materials remained exposed and were blowing into neighboring yards.
The board did not take formal action during the meeting. Staff was directed informally by the mayor to collect the resident’s contact information and follow up; no timetable or further commitments were recorded on the public record at the meeting’s close.
