Cherry District Museum reports steady attendance, completes roof work; early plans for new plaza and expanded parking

Flores said the museum hosted a blacksmith demonstration and volunteer appreciation events in the quarter and recorded about 2,065 students and parents through the school‑year program (August through May). She said a stipend increase approved by the council helps the museum cover utilities and allows the museum to redirect funding to mission‑driven, free community programming. Flores said the museum completed needed roof work with funding from the Oklahoma Historical Society and that the site sustained cleanup needs after a recent flash flood but no structural damage.
Flores said some summer events are planned, including outreach at a Main Street summer festival and a pottery class that filled quickly; a postponed Sons of the Prairie concert is being rescheduled for later in the summer. She also described early architectural mockups for a plaza expansion at the museum entrance, expanded parking, and a landscaped center; the project is in preliminary planning and is expected to move forward in 2026 pending design and code compliance.
Councilmembers thanked Flores and encouraged coordination with the city’s engineering and codes staff as planning advances. No council action was required or taken during the report.
Flores invited council questions about program capacity and scheduling; she said the museum opened Monday through Friday for its Rose Hill School program to accommodate demand and expects attendance to grow next year as more slots are added.
