IMS renovation: asbestos find slows music-suite demolition; auditorium and gym upgrades continue

Site Logic, the contractor on the IMS renovation, told the Bethel Park School District Board that the project remains active but has encountered a localized asbestos finding in the music suite that has delayed full demolition there.
The contractor said crews completed demolition in most of the music area but “found there were 2 layers of flooring, and underneath there was some asbestos flooring that we were unaware of.” The firm said it is awaiting the 10-day county notice required before completing miscellaneous demolition in that room and will proceed with drywall and other finishes after inspections of completed rough-ins.
The update emphasized that work has continued elsewhere. Site Logic reported that mechanical, electrical and plumbing rough-ins are underway, restroom rough-ins have started in the new restrooms, auditorium lighting installation and staining are progressing and theatrical lighting and sound upgrades are planned. “The seats are scheduled to arrive at the August,” the presenter said, noting seating installation will be among the last items.
In the gymnasium, crews began demolition of the bleachers and plan to cover the wood floor with two layers of plywood before bringing in lifts and equipment to avoid flooring damage; the ceiling will be replaced and new lighting and gym equipment installed. On roofing, the contractor said the team paused some tear-off work while students were in school, has continued installing cap sheet where possible and described multiple unforeseen issues: “anything that could go wrong has gone wrong,” the presenter said, adding apologies and that they believe those issues are under control.
Board members were told the district is completing grant documentation to secure Act 34 funding; the board noted the grant amount as $1.7 million. The contractor said district staff and state reviewers have worked through questions about processing a GISA-type project through the grant system and that a mid‑summer disbursement is expected once a few remaining items are supplied to the state.
No formal board action was taken during the presentation; the contractor closed by saying remaining punch-list work will be concentrated this summer, with the music suite and auditorium expected to require the most follow-up.
The board previously accepted the presentation as an informational update; inspectors, county notifications and remaining grant paperwork were noted as near-term items.
