Policy review panel delays action on electronic‑technology policy until cell‑phone rule clears second reading

The Burnsville Public School District Policy Review Committee agreed June 17 to defer final approval of Policy 634, its electronic technologies acceptable use policy, until the district's separate cell‑phone policy (Policy 524) completes its second reading.

Dr. Belmont, assistant superintendent, told committee members that Policy 634 primarily extracts and relocates language about cell‑phone use from Policy 524 and otherwise contains only minor title and formatting changes. Committee members discussed timing and agreed it made sense to have Policy 524 complete its second reading before finalizing references in Policy 634.

Committee members noted the panel does not meet in July. They directed staff to place Policy 634 on the agenda for first reading at the committee's first meeting in August, with the expectation that Policy 524 would be finalized by then. One member said the two policies should appear on an agenda in sequence so any unexpected changes in the second reading for Policy 524 can be addressed before Policy 634 is approved.

Staff also said that if Policy 524 is finalized sooner without substantive change, Policy 634 could be updated more quickly by adding the new reference; there was no time‑sensitive reason to enact Policy 634 immediately. No formal motion or roll‑call vote was recorded in the committee transcript; the scheduling outcome was reached by agreement during the meeting.

The committee's next steps are for the school board to complete the second reading of Policy 524 at its upcoming meeting; staff will then place Policy 634 on the committee's August agenda as a first reading item.
